Why is SPF so important for anti-aging?

At Allure Infinite Beauty, Medspa & Salon, we are commonly treating guests who have lived in The Valley of the Sun for most of their lives, soaking up the rays all year long! While we are more educated about the importance of protecting our skin now, most of us spent our youth unprotected from the Arizona sun and are paying the price now!

We preach SPF to everyone now and here is why sunscreen is crucial for anti-aging:

1. UV Radiation Protection: The primary cause of premature aging of the skin is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV rays can cause damage to the skin cells, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of skin elasticity. Sunscreen creates a protective barrier that helps block UV rays from penetrating the skin. We have also recently realized how damaging blue light can be for our skin aka cell phones, computers, and TVs. This is why making an SPF a part of your everyday routine is a must. Rule to live by: Get up Brush your teeth and Apply your SPF! Every day no matter what! We absorb harmful sun rays even through our windows, so just because you aren’t lying by the pool does not mean you get to skip your SPF.

2. Prevention of Collagen Breakdown: UV radiation accelerates the breakdown of collagen, a protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. Collagen loss is a major contributor to sagging and wrinkling of the skin. We all stop producing our own natural collagen by our late 20’s and slowly lose a % of collagen yearly. Sunscreen helps to maintain collagen levels by preventing UV-induced damage.

3. Reduction of Hyperpigmentation: Prolonged sun exposure can lead to the formation of dark spots and hyperpigmentation on the skin. Sunscreen helps prevent these issues by blocking the harmful effects of UV rays that contribute to uneven skin tone. Since discoloration is a main skin condition we treat at Allure Infinite Beauty, we must talk about the absolute necessity SPF plays in keep an even skin tone. Typically we are using chemical peels, lasers and active at home ingredients to help even out skin tone and keep hyperpigmentation at bay. You MUST protect your investment aka your in office results, or our pigment WILL come back. So not only will daily SPF help prevent hyperpigmentation it will also keep  the pigment we have cleared up away!

4. Prevention of Photoaging: Photoaging refers to the premature aging of the skin caused by exposure to sunlight. This includes the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging. Regular use of sunscreen, and other active anti-aging ingredients, is a key component of a preventive skincare routine to minimize the impact of photoaging.

5. Protection Against Skin Cancer: In addition to its anti-aging benefits, sunscreen also plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Unprotected exposure to UV radiation is a major factor in the development of skin cancers, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

To maximize the anti-aging benefits of sunscreen, it’s important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) and apply it generously to all exposed skin, even on cloudy days or during winter months. When in the sun for extended periods of time, you should reapply every 80 minutes for best coverage and protection. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine is a proactive and effective measure to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation and maintain a more youthful appearance over time.
