At Home Regimens

At Home Skin Care Regimens

We talk about this all the time, you must do your skin care regimen at home every day. But I know I have my faithful at-home facialers (is that a word?) doing everything I tell them to do and their skin is still struggling.

What You Can Do

Sis, I see you, I hear you, and I’m here for you. We have to remember your skin is an organ, and it’s constantly changing. There is no one-size-fits-all for skin. Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t found your perfect regimen yet. Always let us know so we can help guide you to a better fit for your skin.

Don’t however go rogue and start trying to incorporate products on your own, “Oh, my sisters, husbands, brothers uncle gave me this cream to try! What do you think about it?”. Girl I don’t know, I can’t even read the label! Not only can this cause major skin sensitivity, it can also interfere with the treatments we are doing in the office. Please consult your esthetician about any product issue or changes before trying something new!

We have an extensive skin care line and we will be able to help you navigate through your concerns. Just be patient. Your skin didn’t just “get bad” over night and it’s not going to get better overnight.

Trust the Process.

Frequently Asked Questions About Building an Effective At-Home Skincare Regimen

What is the correct order to apply skincare products?

Skincare products are applied in order of texture, from lightest to heaviest, and in order of actives, from most to least pH-dependent. A basic morning routine order: cleanse, toner or essence (hydrating, no exfoliant), vitamin C serum, eye cream, moisturizer, SPF. A basic evening routine: cleanse (double cleanse if wearing SPF or makeup), exfoliating toner or treatment (AHA/BHA if using), retinoid or retinol (if using), eye cream, moisturizer or overnight mask. Prescription treatments and high-potency actives are applied before moisturizer to maximize skin contact and penetration.

How many products do I actually need in a skincare routine?

A genuinely effective skincare routine requires only four to five core products: a gentle cleanser, an active treatment (retinoid, vitamin C, or acid — pick one primary active appropriate for your concerns), a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and a broad-spectrum SPF 50 for daytime. Eye cream and toner are optional additions. Everything else — essences, multiple serums, oils, mists, multi-step treatments — is supplemental. Simplicity is often more effective than complexity: fewer products mean less risk of interaction, irritation, and barrier disruption, and it is easier to identify what is working.

How long should I give products before deciding if they work?

Skincare products require time to show results. Topical vitamin C takes four to eight weeks of consistent daily use before measurable brightening is visible. Retinoids require eight to twelve weeks before significant anti-aging and textural benefits appear. AHA and BHA exfoliants improve texture and congestion faster — visible results within four to six weeks of consistent use. Moisturizers improve hydration immediately but structural skin benefits build over months. Changing products before giving them adequate time is one of the most common reasons people feel that skincare ‘doesn’t work for them.’

What are the most common at-home skincare mistakes?

The most common at-home skincare mistakes include: over-exfoliating (using acids and/or physical exfoliants too frequently, disrupting the skin barrier); layering too many actives at once (combining retinoids, high-concentration AHAs, vitamin C, and benzoyl peroxide in the same routine without appropriate spacing); not using sunscreen (or using an inadequate amount), which negates the benefit of most anti-aging actives; using the wrong product for your skin type (heavy occlusive moisturizers on oily skin; foaming gel cleansers on dry skin); and expecting immediate results from treatments that require weeks of consistent use.

When does at-home skincare need to be supplemented with professional treatments?

At-home skincare is effective for ongoing maintenance, prevention, and managing mild skin concerns. Professional intervention becomes valuable when: you have a specific concern that has not responded to consistent at-home care (deeper pigmentation, active acne with scarring, significant laxity); you want to accelerate results beyond what retail product penetration can achieve; you want professional assessment to make sure your routine is optimized for your actual skin type; or you are approaching seasonal changes that benefit from professional treatments like peels and laser resurfacing. At Allure Infinite Beauty, our team can review your regimen and identify where professional treatment would create the most meaningful improvement.

Additional Questions About Skincare Product Ingredients

How do I introduce new active ingredients without irritating my skin?

New active ingredients — particularly retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C — should be introduced gradually and one at a time. Start with the lowest available concentration and use the product every two to three nights rather than nightly, building to nightly use over four to six weeks as tolerance develops. ‘Sandwich’ method: apply moisturizer before the active to buffer its effect on sensitive skin. Introduce only one new active at a time so that if irritation occurs, the cause is identifiable. Wait four to six weeks before introducing a second active into the routine.

What is skin purging and how is it different from a bad reaction?

Skin purging is a temporary increase in breakouts that can occur when introducing cell-turnover-accelerating ingredients like retinoids and AHAs. These ingredients speed the rate at which existing clogged pores reach the surface, causing a brief apparent worsening before improvement. True purging occurs in areas where you typically experience congestion and clears within four to six weeks of consistent use. A bad reaction — caused by irritation, allergy, or incompatible ingredients — differs in that it occurs in areas not prone to breakouts, does not improve with continued use, and is accompanied by redness, burning, or dermatitis. If a reaction is painful, spreading, or does not improve after a few weeks, discontinue the product and consult a professional.

How At-Home Skincare Supports Your In-Studio Treatments at Allure Infinite Beauty

Professional treatments at a med spa can produce meaningful improvements in skin texture, tone, and clarity — but those results are significantly harder to maintain without a consistent at-home routine working alongside them. At Allure Infinite Beauty, our aestheticians find consistently that clients who follow a personalized home care regimen see better and longer-lasting results from their in-office treatments than those who rely on studio visits alone. The two work together: in-office treatments address the skin at a depth and intensity that home products cannot match, while your daily routine maintains the environment that allows those results to show and hold over time.

Why Consistency Matters More Than Complexity

One of the most common concerns our aestheticians hear is that a routine worked for a while and then seemed to stop. In most cases, the underlying issue is consistency rather than the wrong products. Skin does not change overnight — concerns like pigmentation, breakouts, and visible signs of aging develop over years, and addressing them takes sustained attention. A simple, well-chosen routine used every day is almost always more effective than a complex regimen that gets skipped. Your skin cannot benefit from a product that sits unused on the shelf.

Our team also cautions against adding new products — even well-reviewed ones recommended by friends or family — without first consulting your aesthetician. Skin is highly individual. A product that works beautifully for one person may cause sensitivity or interfere with an active in-office treatment for another. If you are curious about a product you have seen or been given, bring it to your next appointment and ask before incorporating it into your routine.

Building a Morning Routine That Supports Your Treatment Goals

While every routine should be personalized to your skin type and specific concerns, general principles apply broadly to a morning skincare approach. Most clients benefit from starting with a gentle cleanser to remove overnight buildup, followed by any targeted treatment products their aesthetician has recommended. A moisturizer appropriate to your skin type helps support the skin barrier through the day. And broad-spectrum sun protection is, without question, the single highest-impact product in any morning routine — consistent SPF use protects your skin from cumulative UV damage and is essential for preserving the results of any aesthetic treatment you have invested in.

  • Gentle cleanser matched to your skin type — foaming, cream, or micellar depending on your needs
  • Provider-recommended treatment product — toner, targeted serum, or corrective as appropriate
  • Moisturizer — appropriate weight for your skin type and the season
  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher — applied daily, regardless of season or planned sun exposure

An Evening Routine That Lets Your Skin Recover

Evening is when most skin recovery and cellular renewal activity is thought to occur, making the nighttime routine an important opportunity to support that natural process. A thorough cleanse in the evening removes the day's buildup — sunscreen, makeup, and environmental pollutants — and creates a clean foundation for any treatment products to absorb effectively. Depending on your skin concerns and your aesthetician's recommendations, this may be the time to incorporate a more active treatment product, such as a retinoid or a targeted corrective serum, that is not appropriate for daytime use.

  • Cleanser — may differ from your morning product based on your skin's evening needs
  • Treatment product — as recommended by your aesthetician (retinoid, antioxidant, or targeted corrective serum)
  • Moisturizer or overnight treatment — to support the skin barrier through the night

Frequently Asked Questions About At-Home Skincare

How do I know which products are right for my skin?

The most reliable way to build a home care routine is through a professional consultation. Our aestheticians at Allure Infinite Beauty assess your skin in person, review your current products, and recommend a routine that aligns with your goals and the in-office treatments you are receiving. Professional lines like PCA Skin are selected for their compatibility with our treatment protocols and for the quality of their formulations. A personalized recommendation from your provider will always serve you better than a general product guide.

Should I pause any products before an in-office treatment?

In many cases, yes. Certain in-office treatments require you to pause specific home care products in the days leading up to your appointment — particularly stronger actives like retinoids or exfoliating acids. Your provider will give you specific pre- and post-treatment instructions at or before your appointment, and following those guidelines closely matters. Skipping or shortening a required product pause can increase the risk of sensitivity during treatment or reduce the quality of your results. When in doubt, contact us before your appointment.

Can I use the same products year-round here in Mesa?

Many clients find that their skin's needs shift with the seasons — drier in winter months and more oil-prone during the intense summer heat common across the Phoenix Valley. Your aesthetician may recommend adjusting product types or textures to match those changes. If you notice your skin responding differently than usual — tighter, oilier, more reactive — reach out to our team before making product changes on your own. Small adjustments guided by a professional are far less likely to cause irritation or setbacks than self-directed switching. You can always call (480) 831-7109 with a quick question between appointments.
